When visiting touristy places like Cartagena, I make a conscious effort to find accommodation where I feel immersed in the local community. In Cartagena, that means not staying in the historic walled city or in Getsemani neighborhood, where most tourists stay. For me, that accommodation was the Peregrinos Hostel, a boutique seven rooms hostel (three private and four shared rooms) on the other side of the bridge leading to the Gestsemini neighborhood. The hostel is a ten-minute walk to Getsemeni, but along the way, I saw locals chatting with each other, children’s groups learning a new dance and practicing, people sitting on their apartment balconies, and local bars. The locals were many and the tourists few.
Peregrinos Hostel, in the historic district of Manga, is small, cute, clean, and quaint.
The highlights were the hammocks on the veranda and the musicians playing the guitar next door. I stayed in a shared room, but given the number of people coming in at really early hours (once the clubs in Getsemeni closed), I barely slept. I recommend staying in a private room if you value your sleep.
Working with locals, I provide you with uniquely curated experiences and recommendations that get you off the beaten track and into the heart of the community you travel to.
