Medellin Backpacker Hostel (Medellin, Colombia)

The name of the hostel is honest and true; it is what it says it is. The price tag is also reflective of its name! What is special about staying at the Medellin Backpacker Hostel is not the hostel itself, but the Sevilla neighborhood. It is the place to be if you are looking for an authentic Medellín experience.

Directly across from the hostel is a public hospital, and along the street are shops, bars, and apartment buildings. At night at the bars locals convened around large tv screens to watch football (soccer) match. Although the neighborhood is to close to tourist attractions, that’s not an issue. There is a cheap and navigable Metro in the neighborhood, a five-minute walk away from the hostel – it’s a direct line to the major tourist attractions.

Staying at this hostel, I also learned a trick on how to save money on tour packages, such as visiting the city of Guatape (which is about a 2-hour drive from Medellin). Tour companies partner with accommodations, and the prices they charge are dependent on the accommodation. I paid a lot less than the others in my tour group for my tour to La Piedra and Guatape because I was staying at a "backpacker" hostel.

The hostel is basic, but it is clean, cheap and in a great location to experience authentic Medellin life.
