Hunte’s Garden (Barbados)

Updated: Apr 7, 2021

Wow! That’s all I could exclaim when I walked into Hunte’s Garden. I walked in, and images of the forests inhabited by fairies portrayed in movies, cartoons, and books flooded into my mind. When the sun shone through the trees and the swooping birds chirped their tunes, it felt even more so – my inner child jumped with glee.

There are other gardens in Barbados, such as Andromeda Botanic Gardens, and Flower Forest Botanic Garden, but Hunte’s Garden is the most magical.

The garden is located in a gully or a basin-like valley. It was created by Anthony Hunte, a delightful old fellow who I think also happens to make the best rum punch I have had on the island. Apart from the big trees already on the land, Anthony cleared out the gully and planted a wide variety of flowers and plants in big pots. Throughout the garden, there are expressive statues that fit so well where they are placed that I couldn’t help but smile and say, “brilliant!”

Take a picnic basket, a bottle of wine, your camera, and an umbrella - take whatever you will need for a long visit, because you will not want to leave this magical place. I certainly did not.
