Guiyave is a small quaint restaurant serving traditional local cuisine for over 30 years. It’s located in the center of town on the top floor of an unmissable pink building with yellow, green, and white trimmings. The menu has only five meal options, but what it lacks in options it more than makes up for in flavors and portion size.
I heard about Guiyave from Michael, a Dominican friend, after I told him I went to a hotel restaurant to have a Creole Day lunch. Creole Day occurs on the last Friday in October, and celebrates the country’s creole culture. The disappointment in his voice was sobering as he reprimanded me… lol! I asked Michael where he went to have lunch, and he replied “Guiyave.” So to right my wrong, I went to Guiyave for lunch a few days later.
I had the local fish soup. Don’t be fooled by the word ‘soup’ at restaurants in Dominica. The portion was huge and filling! The soup contained big chunks of fish, provisions (what locals call root vegetables, such as sweet potatoes and cassava), thick dough dumplings and other vegetables. I was happily full for the whole day!
