Now you may wonder, why name a restaurant after an insect, particularly a flea! The fact that the owners decided to create a chain of three bistros named after an old catchy song was enough to spark my interest to try the Educated Flea. It was not the first of my choice. Three Birds, the smallest and in my opinion the quaintest of the three, came highly recommended by the owners of the guest house I stayed at but was completely booked for each of the nights I was in Edinburgh. So, I tried mysecond option because the Apiary, was a bit too big for my taste.
And I was not disappointed! The ability to take flavours from different cuisines from around the world, have a menu that is 99% gluten-free with vegan options and accommodating of allergies, and still manage to make spectacular food that is visually pleasing is truly commendable. When I close my eyes and go back to my culinary experience at the Educated Flea, I can still taste the citrus tones of the blood orange hollandaise sauce that crowned the perfectly pan-seared sea bass on a bed of roasted potatoes and greens. The visuals and the taste punched way above the 12 pounds that I paid for the meal.
The educated flea is a rebel in the culinary scene of Edinburgh and this girl likes a good rebel, especially in the culinary space. The ability to take a clever and unconventional name, make spectacular food, be inclusive of dietary needs, be affordable and not be pretentious is a feat that is not easy to achieve.
Visit, and you just might fall in love with Educated Flea!
