Medellín Botanical Garden (Medellin, Colombia)

Travel experience has taught me that outside of countries like Thailand and Indonesia (where they are always a hit), botanic gardens are usually either a miss or hit. The Botanical Garden in Medellín, situated on 35 acres (14.2 hectares) in the center of town, was not a hit nor was it a flop. There was more open space than plants. That said, it was memorable because of the iguanas, the turtles and one particular cactus.

The iguanas and turtles

At a section of the garden it becomes iguana central. And they are huge! They are used to people, so either they will pose for a photo or downright ignore the photographer. I was lucky.

The turtles, on the other hand, move like…turtles, slow and steady. Taking a decent photo was not difficult.

The plants

Past the iguanas and the turtles, there is an arboretum of sorts, with exotic flora and fauna. The plants are pretty cool. I was told that the plant below was not a pineapple but a type of cacti. I am still not convinced. What do you think?

Would I go again? No. Once is enough. But if you have not been, you should definitely go!
