Welcome to a Platform Inspiring and Supporting Women 30+ to Solo Travel

Updated: Nov 26, 2024

There’s something magical about stepping out of your comfort zone and into the world. Solo travel isn’t just about the places you visit; it’s about the person you become along the way.

As I reflect on how Edna Explores came to life, I can’t help but think about the journey that brought me here. It’s a story of adventure, resilience, and a deep desire to help other women—especially those of us 30 and older—experience the transformative power of traveling solo.

A Foundation of Exploration

I grew up in a small village in Sierra Leone, but my parents, Edward and Rosaline Kallon, unlocked the world for me. They believed in the power of experiences to shape a person, and I am living proof of that.

From climbing Mount Kenya with classmates to attending summer camp in Switzerland with my sister, my childhood was filled with moments that expanded my worldview. I’ll never forget watching gorillas in Uganda or family vacations to South Africa and the Netherlands—each one a memory that strengthened my love for adventure.

After college, my parents gave me the ultimate gift: a two-week solo trip to Thailand. That trip changed my life. It sparked my love for slower, more intentional travel. It’s how I found myself spending months exploring Colombia, Dominica, and Cambodia, diving deep into local cultures, and connecting with the world in ways I never imagined.

By 30, I had already been traveling solo for over a decade. Today, in my 40s, I still travel solo and hope to continue doing so well into my 70s.

The Challenges of Solo Travel

I’ll be honest—solo travel isn’t always easy. As women, we face unique challenges on the road. As a woman of color, I’ve experienced my share of discrimination, unwanted attention, and moments of feeling out of place. I’ve been questioned at airports and faced stares simply because I was traveling alone. Despite these challenges, I’ve kept going. Each trip taught me more about myself, the world, and the resilience within us all. Solo travel isn’t just about seeing new places; it’s about stepping into the unknown, trusting yourself, and realizing you’re stronger than you ever thought.

Why Edna Explores Was Started

When I turned 35, I boldly chose to step away from my professional career and focus entirely on travel. For over a year, I explored new destinations, reflected on my journey, and reconnected with what mattered most to me. I then thought I should return to the career field I had previously worked in, but that did not turn out well, and I found myself resigning after three years.

By the time I turned 40, I knew I wanted to do more than travel. I wanted to share the lessons I’d learned, the strength I’d gained, and the joy I’d discovered. I wanted to empower other women—especially those of us 30 and older—to take that first step into solo travel or to continue to less-known destinations.

That’s how Edna Explores was born. It’s more than a platform—it’s a community, a safe space where we can share stories, resources, and encouragement. It’s about proving that solo travel isn’t just for the boldest or youngest among us—it’s for anyone ready to step into their power.
