Tips & Tricks
These tips will save you some time, money and a lot of headache. Read through these to stay safe and enjoy your trip!
Understanding Prices
When looking at money, the use of a dot indicates thousands, and the use of a period represents 10. Example 10.000 means fifty thousand. 50,0 means 50. For nationals of countries who think the opposite (e.g., United States), no worries, this is an easy switch.
Pictures with Panlequeras in Cartagena
It's not free to take a picture with Palenqueras, the deep chocolate-skinned women in colorful and vibrant dresses selling fruits in bowls transported on their heads. While there is no set fee, you must pay to get your picture taken with Cartagena's symbols - consider 20,000 COP (about USD 6) a good starting point.
Saving money in Medellin
The accommodation at which you stay determines how much you pay for tours. Hostels like Backpackers hostels will offer lower prices for tours outside of Medellin compared to other places. These hostels also tend to have private rooms if bunking with others is not your preferred choice.
Bathroom in Salento
In Salento, nothing other than organic waste should be flushed in the toilet, given the plumbing age. Instead, non-organic waste (such as used toilet paper) is to be placed in the bin labeled biohazard; it is emptied every day by the cleaning staff. No worries, your bathroom will not stink!
Cash
Always have cash with you as in some places, mostly out of big cities, ATMs are scarce, and not all businesses have cash machines.
